  10.      This document provides information about Trash it! Please read the
  11. License document which tells you about my copyright, your rights and
  12. your warranty. Please also read the Register document which tells you
  13. how to register this software. For detailed instructions on how to use
  14. Trash it, please read the Help file.

  17. Introduction
  18. ------------
  19.      Welcome to Trash it, the premier uninstall utility for Microsoft
  20. Windows 95 or higher. Trash it is the best way of uninstalling programs
  21. from your hard drive. 
  22.  
  23.      Have you ever installed a program on your hard drive using the 
  24. Install (or Setup, or whatever) utility that came with the program, 
  25. decided that you did not like the program, and then tried to remove it? 
  26. If you have, you probably found out that you only recovered a fraction 
  27. of the hard disk space you had before you installed the program. This
  28. is because the installation procedure scattered dozens of files all 
  29. over your drive. Some went into folders created by the installation 
  30. process itself, and some went into folders that already existed, such 
  31. as the \Windows and \Windows\System folders. Unfortunately, the
  32. uninstallation utility that comes with various programs does not
  33. uninstall all files.

  35.      If you simply delete all the files you can find that seem to be 
  36. related to the program you wish to uninstall, you may find additional 
  37. problems. You may inadvertently skip some files related to the program 
  38. or alternatively, you may delete files belonging to another 
  39. application. A setup program also makes various changes to your system 
  40. files (such as Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Windows.ini, System.ini etc.) 
  41. as well as your registry. Uninstalling these changes on your own can be
  42. risky.

  44.      Enter Trash it. Trash it will delete all files installed by a 
  45. program, remove all subdirectories created by it and delete all changes 
  46. made by the program in your various system files and as well as in your 
  47. registry.

  49.      As if that isnÆt impressive enough, Trash it also comes with an 
  50. in-built scheduler that runs periodically in the background and deletes 
  51. files that you don't need, such as Windows Log files, Windows temporary 
  52. files, files in the \Windows\temp folder, files in your Recycle Bin, 
  53. unused DLL files etc. If you use Trash it, you free your hard disk of 
  54. files that you donÆt really need, leaving more space for the ones that 
  55. you really do. You can even customize the list of files or folders that 
  56. you want to delete, and you can configure how often you want the 
  57. Scheduler to run. The default options that come pre-built with the 
  58. Scheduler works fine for most users though, and can free up quite a lot 
  59. of free space by deleting files that you dont really need. The 
  60. Scheduler runs in the system tray, and starts, cleans up your hard 
  61. drive, and then exits, without your having to press a single button or 
  62. a single mouse click. It's like magically getting more free space!

  64.      Still need convincing? Install Trash it and let my program speak
  65. for itself.

  68. Installing Trash it!
  69. --------------------
  70.      Just double click on the Trash it.exe file, and follow the on 
  71. screen instructions. After installation double click on Trash it.exe to
  72. run Trash it. Please note that Trash it needs the Visual Basic 6
  73. runtime files to work. To reduce download time, the VB6 runtime files 
  74. are not distributed along with the Trash it Setup program. It is likely
  75. that the VB6 runtime files are already present on your system. If Trash
  76. it does not start after installation, you need to obtain the runtime 
  77. files from www.microsoft.com. Alternatively, mostly all CD-ROM's that 
  78. come with various PC magazines contain the runtime files which you can 
  79. install.

  82. How to use Trash it!
  83. --------------------
  84.      On the main screen, there are 5 buttons. A brief description of
  85. what each does is given below (for detailed instructions on how to use
  86. Trash it, please read the Help file)

  88. Update database: Takes a snapshot of your hard drive as well as your
  89.      system files.
  90.  
  91. Find changes: Compares the current state of the drive with the saved
  92.      database, and shows a list of what's changed (files added, changes
  93.      to the registry or other system files, etc)
  94.  
  95. Uninstall from saved file: When you click on Find Changes, you can save
  96.      the changes reported by Trash it for later deletion. If you do 
  97.      decide to delete a program later, click on this button.
  98.  
  99. Options: Trash it is optimally configured for most users, but if you
  100.      want, you can configure Trash it to suit your own personal needs.
  101.      For example, you can setup Trash it to scan just the windows and
  102.      Program Files directories, instead of the whole of your hard drive
  103.      (which is the default option).

  105. System clean-up: Windows and other programs can create a lot of useless
  106.      files that you don't need. Temporary files(*.tmp), Old files
  107.      (*.old), log files(*.log), unused DLL files and so on. This is a
  108.      one stop shop for getting rid of all useless files on your drive.
